When should I look at installing a Stairlift?

As with many things in life, it is important not to leave it too late, but to start to think about options early, so when the "need" arises it is an easy and quick process. When planning your retirement, make sure to think about WHERE you want to grow old?
Do you want to downsize? Do you want to move to a resort style retirement village? Or Do you want to stay in your family home? If either of your preferred living arrangements includes stairs, you need to think about how you will be coping with the stairs as time progresses.

Stairs are usually easy to manage, but as you get older, they can become a real hazard, especially if you suffer from aching joints. Many people choose to install a stairlift after someone had a fall or a very close call on the stairs. In my opinion, this is a mistake! The sole purpose of a stairlift is to prevent falls and accidents, so if you are struggling to walk up the stairs without the handrail, tend to get light headed or dizzy or feel pain in your joints after you used the stairs it is time for a stairlift or moving house!

You might argue that you will be okay as long as there is a handrail to hold on to, but what if you need to carry some washing or shopping up the stairs? If you are anything like me you won't wait for someone to come home to give you a hand, but you will just try and do it yourself, and that is when accidents happen!

A serious fall doesn't only hurt the body, but it also does a lot of damage to our minds by taking away confidence. All of a sudden you may pass on going to the movies as there are stairs in the cinema, or you will want to stay at home instead of going on your daily walk as you are worried that you may trip over and have another fall with a lengthy recovery.

Prevention is the best medicine! So don't wait until something goes wrong, but be proactive and explore all your options for ageing in place in a safe environment.

A stairlift is a significant investment, and you will be using it numerous times a day, so regardless of what brand you choose make sure to have a test ride so you can make an informed decision.
