Mobility Scooter Insurance

Mobility Scooters are a great way to retain your mobility when driving a car becomes too difficult. They are safe, easy to use, cheap to run and very convenient.

However, while Mobility-scooters are perfectly safe, accidents, unfortunately, do happen and theft can also be an issue if your gopher isn't stored securely. The accidents may be minor, such as reversing into a small pole or puncturing a tyre.

Having an accident or having your mobility equipment stolen, can be very inconvenient, distressing and costly. You may need to have your mobility-scooter repaired or replaced, leaving you without your usual mode of transport in the meantime and of course, there is the cost that is associated with the repairs. Even worse you may even have to pay for third-party damages if the accident caused damage to other people or their property.

Here at Bluesky Healthcare, we recommend that you invest in insurance that covers your mobility equipment.

There are a couple of different Insurances that provide cover. Two which we deal with frequently are Wheels to Go by RAC and Blues Badge Insurance, who provide cover for electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters. Both of these covers are very affordable and give you some flexibility to tailor the insurance to your needs.

A scooter or powerchair insurance is quite similar to a motor car insurance, only that it is a lot more affordable. While they may differ slightly at the core they should be offering the below services:

  • Repair or replacement of a damaged mobility equipment
  • Loss or damage caused by theft, vandalism, fire and flood
  • Cover for injuries caused by the accident to the driver
  • Third Pary Cover
  • Third party property cover
  • Assistance in returning home after a breakdown or an accident
  • Can include other registered users of your mobility equipment
  • Cover for travelling with your mobility-scooter

It is a good idea to get at least two quotes and compare these against each othere. We would also recommend paying extra attention to the cover for your public liability, as this can be a substantial sum in extreme case, where others are seriously injured or even killed. So make sure you check the limit of your cover to make sure your don't get caught out if something does happen.

With mobility-scooters becoming more and more common on our roads and footpaths, unfortunately, we also see an increase in theft and vandalism. Make sure that your insurance covers you for the complete value of your mobility equipment. We also recommend opting for a breakdown assistance/service as they can be very handy and take the stress out of those already uncomfortable situations. Make sure that you keep the "roadside assistance" number on you at all times or even add a little sticker to your scooter or on your keychain.

While we do recommend insurance, we also understand that this can be costly and may not fit into your budget. However, it is worth getting a quote, as you may be surprised at how affordable it is.
